Onto the second question of our CCR!! I looked over all the questions and, in my opinion, this might be the trickiest one. The question asks: how does your product engage with audiences and how would it be distributed as a real media text?
Our teacher explained to us that this is asking us to identify our target audience, distribution plans for the film, and what production choices were made to work to engage the audiences. So here's everything that I have to help me answer this question!
TARGET AUDIENCE:
Since my genre is sci-fi based, it generally targets an older generation of tech-savvy audiences. This often appeals to adults aged 35 to 50 (this research can also be found on my genre research post). However, my film aims to target a younger audience of 16 to 24 because of the themes surrounding concepts that are more relatable to them. Moreover, our main character is a young teen, so her feelings and decisions surrounding her situation might not be understood by older generations. My film is not gender specific, even though sci-fi films usually have more male than female audiences, my film aims to target both.
DISTRIBUTION:
For distribution and marketing, I'm planning on creating a social media accounts on apps like TikTok and Instagram specifically for this film (with a tag like @evanesecent2026) so that it can reach my target audiences. On these accounts, teasers and trailers are posted to attract audiences who enjoy sci-fi films. The distribution is mainly going to be digital and online, because this is the most cost-efficient distribution method, considering that this film is produced by a new production company. Another way that we could get Evanescent to reach more audiences is by collaborating with brands who are widely recognised. Collaborations with big streaming companies might not be realistic, but collaborating with social media content creators or small clothing brands could help. Furthermore, collaborating with clothing brands would let us produce merchandise. As a new producer, entering film festivals to compete for prizes can help Evanescent gain recognition. Not only will this expose the film to a larger audience, it will also allow critics and writers to provide insight on the project.
PRODUCTION CHOICES:
The location chosen for this film is very specific. I wanted to film at a quiet beach to show the how humanity as diminished. This is very important to the world-building elements of this film because it lets the audience know that there's not a lot of people around. My decision to use props (the glass jar, makeshift bag, newspaper, radio) was also very essential in engaging with the audience. The audience learns about Mila's survival condition and get a glimpse of her past life. The editing choices made for this film considered all the details on how the audience would view Mila's situation. The mood at first is light and peaceful, with warm hues to show that she is comfortable on the beach. However, the flashback contrasts this with cool hues and a lowered saturation. The warmth does not return fully to Mila after the flashback. This could help the audience relate to Mila more, since many people have experienced lost of loved ones (this could refer to break-ups, friendship fallouts, or death).
